Abstract & Overview

The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) in dentistry has transformed the periodontal and dental disease diagnosis scenario. Recent advancements in AI and ML presented within this review, such as their applications in early detection, risk evaluation, image-based classification, and treatment planning for periodontal and related oral disease. With the synthesis of outcomes from a range of studies conducted between 2021-2024, this paper presents a systematic review of AI-models, their methods, accuracy, and issues faced during integration. The results identify that while AI can increase precision and efficiency, further studies are necessary to overcome issues with heterogeneity in data, interpretability, and clinical validation.
