Abstract & Overview

Pressure Ulcers (PU) complicate hospital treatments and are expensive to the Australian health system. Medical Device-Related Pressure Ulcers (MDR PU) are caused from constant pressure from medical devices on the skin leading to tissue injury and ulcer formation. This study examined the protein composition of MDR-PU wound fluid to identify biochemical trends related to healing, severity of the MDR PU, or impacts from other comorbidities. This study found diabetes and tissue characteristics were associated with the MDR PU protein composition. Finally, the protein Alpha-1 Antitrypsin was significantly lower in non-healing MDR PUs, indicating that it’s associated with MDR PU healing.
